The messaging application used the world over has reached a record 250 million monthly active users. It is the first time that WhatsApp reveals an approximate number of users of its popular application, and the figure impressed.
In fact, the 250 million users mark WhatsApp overcome in itself brilliant, Twitter users, who last December reached 200 million active users. And threaten the record of Skype, which has 280 million monthly active users, according to the Wall Street Journal .
WhatsApp's success is even more striking if we consider that the application was born only four years ago and, unlike many of its rivals, not spend money on marketing. This growth is a concern WhatsApp for other companies, especially telecommunications, they got huge profits with text messages, and others like Facebook, who base much of their success in the exchange of messages between users.
The steady increase in the number of users WhatsApp has not suffered by the controversy generated three months ago, when the company decided to charge 89 cents a year to use the application. The ability to send unlimited messages without having to pay the high rates of SMS has increased its popularity month, despite competition from rivals such as Line or WeChat.
Another reason for its success is to be a cross-platform application. WhatsApp is available for iPhone, Android devices, BlackBerry and Windows Phone, among others. Currently on the U.S. ranked 31st among the free apps for Android.
